Introduction

Montu Mia is a software engineer. Good job, solid company, the whole deal. Then one day a billion-dollar idea hits him out of nowhere: an app called BiralTube, where people post cute cat videos until the entire world is hooked. ("Biral" means "cat," by the way. Just roll with it.)

The moment the idea landed, Montu got to work. Two months of late nights and the app is ready. He hits publish and... boom, instant hit. Thousands of people pile in to watch cats do cat things. Montu is on cloud nine, already fantasizing about tossing his resignation letter onto his boss's desk like a movie hero.

The good times do not last.

Within days, weird little bugs start creeping into the app. Users complain: it's slow, videos won't load, and when someone taps "like," the count just... doesn't move. One bug turns into ten, ten into a hundred, all closing in on poor Montu at once.

He's stumped. How do giants like Facebook, Google, and YouTube serve hundreds of millions of people without breaking a sweat, while his humble little BiralTube is already gasping for air at a few thousand?

Out of ideas, Montu goes to the office guru, the senior engineer everyone calls Boltu Mia. Boltu hears the whole sad story, gives a knowing smile, and says:

"Listen, kid. You wrote the code, fine. But did you ever actually learn system design? Skip that, and an app like this falls over every single time."

That was the wake-up call. Montu rolls up his sleeves and starts studying for real, patching up BiralTube as he goes. Scaling, load balancing, partitioning, CDNs, he picks it all up hands-on, one broken thing at a time. And slowly, almost like magic, BiralTube starts flying again.
